About FOTG

Have you ever picked up a book or an article and found that you just can’t put it down? Why is that? Have you ever listened to a person talking, and you are drawn in, engaged, and tuned in? Why is that? Why are some books more readable than other books, and some are nearly unreadable? Why are some speakers better able to communicate the same information in a more interesting and engaging way than others?

There is a way of writing and speaking that is more interesting and engaging. The writing method known as New Journalism, a home-grown American movement, has rediscovered some of the ideas put forth by Ancient Rhetoricians, and has revolutionized the writing of non-fiction. Writers like Erik Larson, and the late David Halberstam and Truman Capote are among those who write and wrote using this method. It is a method that translates well to public speaking, including preaching.

Using these methods, non-fiction reads and sound like a story, and people like to read or listen to a story, and they like to read or listen to a good story. What they like most of all is a good story told by a good story teller. We have a very good story, what has been glossed as The Greatest Story Ever Told; the story of God and man, and it is non-fiction. Using these new methods will help any pastor to better, more clearly, and more creatively communicate this true story to his people.

At Focus on the Gospel, we strive to help pastors to be better preachers. The book articulates how to write and preach a better sermon, and includes material of interest to all levels. The weekly notes help preachers each week to better understand the text and how to better preach it. The workshop is an intensive day-long event where we go hands-on and get the latest in content and methodology. Tutoring is available for those who seek a more personal and individualized approach.

We are about better preaching, a win/win if there ever was one. Everybody, the guy in the pulpit and the people in the pew, likes better preaching!
